An assertive and proactive program, National Counseling Group's mission

southeastern region in Virginia, will maintain the company’s
high standards of excellence and offer the same quality treatment
services for children, adolescents, young adults, adults, and family
members and will also bring specialized treatment options in the

Minnesotan Assists Victims of Tsunami in
Thailand
Minneapolis, Minnesota – December 31, 2004 – Gary
Dahl, a native of Northfield, Minnesota, is leading the Minneapolis-based American
Refugee Committee’s (ARC) humanitarian relief operations to assist victims
of the recent earthquake and tsunami in Asia.
“There is such devastation here,” commented Dahl. “Villages
have literally been swept away in the tsunami. I drove by a school today, and
all that remained standing was the flagpole. Bodies have been washed ashore
and remain buried in the sand. I also drove by the hotel where my family and
I were going to be staying for the holidays. It was flattened to the ground.
Had we not had a last-minute change of plans, we would have been there when
the tsunami hit. The magnitude of the crisis is overwhelming.”
The earthquake
and tsunami have left nearly 125,000 people dead in 12 countries, and an additional
5 million people—many in poor health and separated
from family members—at risk with little food, shelter, or water.
On Friday,
ARC delivered life-saving medical supplies to victims of the disaster in Southern
Thailand in villages near Phang Nga and Ranong. The supplies will assist approximately
6,000 displaced Burmese refugees in the region. ARC is working with a medical
clinic in the region and will distribute bandages, IV fluids, oral rehydration
solutions, antibiotics, and other needed supplies. The ARC team will also conduct
a thorough assessment of the region to determine where the needs are most dire.
“Though the destruction was great, there are things that relief organizations
like ARC can do that will literally save thousands of lives,” commented
Hugh Parmer, President of ARC. “Our staff visited 2 villages in the
Suksamran region where, with $30,000, ARC could install water systems that
would provide clean water to hundreds of people. Quick response by ARC could
literally save lives, as the public health conditions are already worsening,
and the desperate population is at risk of dying from cholera and diarrheal
disease. With donations from the public, we could respond immediately.”
ARC
is also hiring medical personnel in Indonesia where 80,000 people are confirmed
dead. ARC also plans to conduct an assessment mission in Sri Lanka, where 30,000
are reported dead and one million homeless. ARC will determine what role it
might play in supporting health care, water sanitation, and shelter construction.
While
the scope of the damage caused by the tsunami is still being assessed, it is
no doubt one of the worst natural disasters in recent years. Deaths are being
reported in Thailand, Indonesia, India, Sri Lanka, Maldives, and as far away
as Somalia and Tanzania. In the coming days and weeks, ARC will continue to
assess the emergency needs of the region, with the intent of providing whatever
help it can to the victims of the disaster.
Donations to ARC can be made online
at www.archq.org or
by phone at 612-872-7060.
About the American Refugee Committee:

people every year.
About Gary Dahl:
Gary Dahl, a native of Northfield, Minnesota, has worked with the American
Refugee Committee in Thailand for 16 years. He currently directs ARC’s
operations, which serve refugees from Burma in the western part of Thailand.
Dahl graduated from the University of Minnesota, and also worked as a mental
health care worker at Abbott Northwest Hospital and the University of Minnesota
Hospitals.
